One Design Sails are either manufactured with strict specifications or they have a building guideline that can be altered a bit, so that the sail still stays within the tolerances. With smaller boats like dinghy classes and keelboats, the tolerances are the strictest. For medium to large boats, they are built with standard specifications, but the possibility of alterations is allowed as long as they remain within certain tolerances.
Some class associations require that the sails be measured by their own Class Measurers. Certain boats need to have an Official World Sailing Measurer to measure their sails. Classes like the Optimist and J class have to have a royalty tag stitched onto the sails.
One Design is Internationally recognized
Ullman Sails is known worldwide for producing One Design Sails for over 30 years. To us the interesting aspect of making One Design Sails is that each sail from each class has to be made exactly the same. We don’t just have to follow the job cards, but we also have to stay up to date with any changes to the class rules.
It is very exciting to know that any of the sails that we build could and have gone on to win major events, competing against like-for-like boats. Because of this we have a winning record in a number of classes that prove just how fast our One Design sails are. To us, One Design production is about precision, the best design, the perfect shape, and exact finishing. This translates into the fastest sail on the water. We take pride in every sail we build and every result you get.
Ullman Sails Durban (One Design Loft)
The team specialists
Our Durban loft manufactures our One Design sails. The loft is run by Sandy Samways who is the Manager, together with the team of sailmakers who are extremely hard working. The sails arrive at the One Design loft from Cape Town pre-cut. They are then assembled (a bit like a puzzle) before the sails get seamed and marked. After this the patches get put on and the tapes are done. Then they go to the finishing machine for the final stitching and thereafter they are taken to handwork for all the hardware to be attached to the sail.
The loft has a reputation for producing some of the best One Design sails in the world. They recently expanded the loft floor to allow for bigger sails to be manufactured. The team takes pride in their attention to detail because their finishing is a very high priority. Sails built in the Durban loft have won numerous World and National Championships and continues to be admired by sailors around the world.
